Friday’s WooHa Jam of The Day: tUnE-yArDs

Finally! Merril is back and tUnE-yArDs are back. She has been on tours and also less available since she dropped the hugely successful tUnE-yArD album,  w h o k i l l. All of us fans out there have been waiting and waiting and waiting for her to come to town with a new amazing album. And boom, she does let down. Merrill Garbus was in Haiti last year to, where she absorbed the culture and contributed as a human. Also while there, she, as she puts it, “situated myself in a non-western musical tradition.” She took dance classes and enjoyed life, pulling from a swath of music and dance influence. Like a strong method actor, Merrill places herself in musical context to find her creative vision and then she executes amazingly in her style. So here we are, the release of “Water Fountain,” an amazing song off her upcoming album, Nikki Nack, out May 6th.

Tuesday’s Hot Sneak Peek Jam of the Day: Tune-Yards, Angelique Kidjo, ?uestlove, and Akua Naru (Epic Fela Kuti Tribute)

Wow,

Can’t say much about this other than damn! This is a hot song. It has all the love and talent  you want in a sick super group. “Lady” is a well-known Fela Kuti song and this killing squads tributes his iconic music well and perfectly. Akua Naru has been a favorite female hip artist of mine along side Jean Grae for some time. Basically, the talent on this album is undeniable. It has everything a rhythm and soul heavy Fela Kuti Song needs. The song has hot sick nasty pocket coming from
?uestlove, sick hip hop from Naru, powerful soulful vocals from Angelique Kidjo and heavy tUnE-yArDs accompaniment/looping. Not to mention the album has stellar production as well. The album, (RED) Hot + FELA, will be released on Knitting Factory Records and is a tribute to Fela Kuti and launches in the fall. This album plays a role in raise to zero campaign “to raise funding and awareness to help deliver an AIDS Free Generation by 2015, a critical milestone in the fight against AIDS.” The virtual elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is part of the eight Millennium Development Goals, which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS by the target date of 2015.

This album, this song, this effort sweats sexy awesomeness–there is no doubt about that. I guarantee that you will be blasting this cut on repeat throughout the day and dropping your head and hands to every angle of rhythmic bliss that this song exemplifies.
Proceeds from this single will be donated to the charity as well so get out there and support

Friday the 13th hot Jam of the Day: tUne-yarDs

I have been a fan of Merrill Garbus and her projects since she was in Sister Suvie. So here we are, it’s Friday, the 13th and it’s been a year since tUne-yarDs launched their amazingly catchy, technically gorgeous, synchopated, rawkus, afro-global rhythm infused jams and a trail of memeorable tUne-yarD dance parties internationally. “My Country” was one of  the hit single off Who Kill  and it has finally received an awesome music video off 4AD rec.

Furthermore, this video is a part  of the  tUnE-yArDs’ Kickstarter campaign to benefit San Francisco Rock Project: http://kck.st/HwyTRK. Also, these kids are way cooler than i will ever be. lots of fun. Dig it!

Enjoy today’s hot Friday the 13th video debut jam of the day!
